38w0d -38w6d - Kids say the darndest things :)

I've spent a bit more time with my niece and nephews this week, and the things they say are so so cute and inquisitive. BIL has two sons, the oldest one is not that much interested in the baby, but the youngest was told that he is going to be an older brother and he is all over DH on when the baby is going to get here. Just a few days ago, he asked DH to make him a sandwich, then he asked when the sandwich is going to be ready, and then when the baby is going to be ready, LOL. When I came over, he touched my belly and I told him that the hard spot at the top is baby's bum. He was interested, and asked where the baby's head was. I pointed a bit lower on the tummy (not to the exact location of course), and the next question was: "Why the baby is upside down?" I almost said that it was because he is in a position for easier exit (that would have been a problem as DH & BIL have already been fighting off questions about how the baby is going to come out!), but luckily SIL interjected and said that it was because baby liked it that way. Then we had questions about why the baby likes it that way, what is he doing in there, why is he swimming etc., etc. etc. Later my SIL told me that the oldest one actually asked her how did the baby get in my tummy. Hmmm... My nephew is only 6 years old, so it is a bit early to have the whole conversation about THAT with him. Luckily the younger one interjected with more questions and that topic was dropped. SIL confessed that she is dreading more questions when the baby actually gets here. Oh the joys of parenthood :)

When I was at my sis' house last week, my niece asked me if she can come to the hospital to see the baby (she is very very excited about her cousin), so I told her that she can come as long as she is not sick. She said that she knows what to do not to get sick - she is washing her hands all the time, eating healthy and exercising. So that was the end of that conversation, until my sis told me what happened a few days later. Their neighbours stopped by to bring something over, and my sis asked my niece to hug the boy (who is the same age as her), to which she replied "NO! He has to wash his hands first!". The situation was a bit awkward as they were just standing in the hallway, so my sis repeated her request, to which my nice replied "He has to wash his hand first! I am going to the hospital to see the baby and I am NOT getting sick!" I do love my niece and nephews to pieces!!!
Her brother is only 2.5 years old and he doesn't understand yet anything about the baby. When my sis shows him my tummy and says that the baby is in there and then asks where the baby is, he just pats his own :).

Going back to the events of the past week. I've had a few visitors during the day, which was nice. My mom and aunt came by and so did a friend of mine. We had so much fun that the construction guys told DH that our laughter was louder than their tools.

On Thursday DH & I headed to Wal.mart and finally finished shopping for the items that I needed for the hospital bag (although it has not been packed yet). I've also done some more laundry (easy does it for me).

On Friday, the constructions guys finished the basement. Yei!!! Right on time as promised and as scheduled. After DH got home, we went to my sis house for Shabbat dinner. Two of my cousins were there as well (I knew about one but not about the other so was pleasantly surprised). One of my cousins came with her kid and her kid and my niece were getting rowdy. We had dinner and then headed home. I had to get ready for the night out with the girls. It was nice to get away from the house - me, my sis, SIL and my cousin (the one with no kids). We stayed in the restaurant pretty late, but since my cousin had a long drive home, she also didn't drink and I was relieved that I didn't have to drive.

On Saturday, DH & I had shopping plans (but not for a baby), there was still some stuff that DH needs to finish in the basement (it was not part of the deal with the contractors, so no blame there) plus we needed groceries as well. We were going from one store to another, and I was exhausted. We decided to stop and eat at our favourite Asian restaurant, and it was 4:53 p.m. It said that they were closed until 5 p.m., but all the doors were open so we got in. We asked if we could sit down, but the host/waiter told us that they are not open yet and to come back. Well, you don't say that to a heavily pregnant woman! I was pissed! They couldn't let us in 5 min earlier, that was just ridiculous and I wouldn't have any of that. So we went to a middle eastern place. The food there was great, we each had soup of the day and some falafel. Then I decided that I wanted a steak salad. When the waiter came to take an order he asked if I wanted "medium". I told him that medium would be fine. My thinking was that since we already had some food, the medium size to share would be just enough for us (and leave some room for desert :) ). DH asked me a few times if I was sure that I wanted medium, and I said: "definitely". The restaurant was getting busier and there were more people coming and ordering food. There was a group next to our table and I could hear them talking about "medium", "well done" and "rare" meat, and at that moment it dawned on me! I asked DH if the question the waiter was asking was about the size or the meat, and he said the meat! I said why did he let me order "medium" meat, as I've never in my life had medium (I don't like blood), and especially now that I am pregnant. He said that I was very convincing and he wasn't about to argue with a heavily pregnant wife. But he never even said if I wanted "well done" he just asked if I was sure that I wanted "medium", so it was all his fault! He actually talked to the waiter and we got our meat "well done". After dinner we stopped by my BILs house and spent some time with his family, and then headed home as my parents dropped by to see the basement.

Sunday, DH & I decided to host another family breakfast as it might be the last one for a while. We had fun with the family and DH tried new recipe. My mom and brother stayed longer, and since we had a late night and early morning, I was just falling asleep on the couch. DH & I didn't do much for the rest of the day, but in the evening DH was painting baseboards and doors, so it was again a late night for him.

Monday was a very eventful day, first, we had a pediatrician appointment in the morning. We waited for the doctor for about 45 minutes and the waiting room was full with kids of all ages. Both DH & I really liked the doctor when we finally met him. He asked us a few questions including with respect to our fertility, and I asked him for his thoughts on immunization. He is pro immunization but he said that he would want us to be very comfortable with our decision and he would understand whatever our decision would be and work with us if we want to alter schedule of immunization. Both my sis and SIL delayed immunization until after the kids's first birthday, but DH and I are on the fence about that. I am thinking of just staggering them a bit, so that he doesn't get them in batches. Luckily this is a decision that we don't need to make until the baby is 2 months old (which gives us some time to breathe, as right now I have absolutely no time to read up and research on immunization). Although the doctor did say one thing that made me think. He said that a disease will resurface when the non-immunization population reaches 20-25% and currently in Canada it is 10-15%, and those are life threatening diseases. Kind of scary!

My OBGYN appointment was later in the afternoon, and since DH & I spent over an hour at the pediatrician, I asked DH to take me to my parents so that my mom can drive me to the appointment. I had breakfast at my parents' house (which was around noon) and then my mom drove me to drop of some documents for my maternity/parental offices. I was lucky that they took all the documents at the information counter without waiting a long line for a representative. When we got home, both my mom and I were very sleep, so I had a nice 1 hour nap before heading to the OBGYN's office.

When my doctor measured and felt my tummy, he said that in the past 2 weeks the baby descended just a bit, but not yet engaged. My next appointment is next Wednesday (the day before my due date), and the doctor said that if there will not be much progress, he will induce me on the Friday (March 9), which was fine with me. I didn't ask why he would induce me basically on my due date, but I am thinking that's because the baby is already big. I asked him what was going to happen if the baby would not drop any further, and he said that in that case we would have to consider C-section. Surprisingly, I was OK with all of that, but when I called and told DH he got a bit upset, as he really doesn't want me to have any more surgeries (two IVF retrievals were enough). I explained to him that it is better that the doctor uses c-section than trying to force the baby out with forceps and vacuum. Well, I guess we will wait until next Wednesday and will go from there. I am actually happy that either way I will probably not be pregnant past the weekend of the 10th (although I don't think that I am ready for the baby to come out just yet.

Another great thing happened on Monday, my friend gave birth to her baby boy! She called on Tuesday and we chatted. She had a c-section scheduled for 8:30 a.m. on Monday morning, and I left her a message on Sunday wishing her all the best. She called me back and we chatted around 7 p.m. On Monday morning at 8:00 a.m. we get a text from her boyfriend that she gave birth at 1:30 a.m. to a baby boy (they left the sex a surprise). Apparently her baby was too anxious to come out and her water broke as she was going to sleep, so instead of having a good sleep, they hurried over to the hospital where she had a c-section as the baby was in breach (and her first one was a c-section). Both the baby and mommy are doing great, and can't wait to go home. :)

On Tuesday morning I decided to walk to the bank to move some money around and into RRSP (as the last day for that was on Wednesday). The walk took a while and it turned out to be a 4 km walk (both ways). When I got to the bank, I recognized the lady that was serving me and she recognized me. We met at the same time a year but 2 years ago in 2010. We were undergoing IUIs at that time and she actually had done 6 IVFs with all of them resulting in miscarriages, and only after the last miscarriage she was diagnosed with the rare blood disorder, so she and her husband were pursuing adoption. Talking to her in 2010 really helped me to put our situation in perspective. When I saw her yesterday, I recognized her name, but didn't want to bring it up. She scanned my card and also recognized my name. She asked how things were going, as the counter was pretty high and until I moved to sit with her at a desk she didn't see my huge belly. She looked genuinely happy for me. I ask her how her adoption process going, and she told me that they've tried to adopt two times and both times it felt through. I didn't pry. She said that she turned 46 and finally put over 10 years of TTC and adoption process behind her. She has 4 nieces who adore her and her husband and she thinks of them as her kids. It was nice to hear that she got closure and now taking care of herself, the life she put on hold for the past 10 years. We chatted a bit about my struggles conceiving and she asked that I bring the baby to the bank to show her, although I don't think it would be such a good idea. She is just such a nice lady that I am afraid to somehow hurt her feelings.

After the 4 km track to the bank and back I wasn't in much condition to do anything, but lay on the couch. My back and butt were killing me! I've spent some time watching TV and trying to sort some baby stuff. In the evening my mom's friend came over with her husband (they've known me since I was 11 years old, so we have a very good relationship). She needed my help and her husband needed the help of my DH, and that turned out to be a very long night as they didn't leave until after 12:30 a.m. (all because DH was so involved in sharing his knowledge he lost track of time!).

The night was awful! About an hour after I went to bed, I woke up chocking. I was coughing vigorously and had tears running down my cheeks. DH was in the office, but ran over when he heard me struggling. He asked me what happened, but I didn't know. When I calmed down a bit, I realized that I was chocking, so I asked him what was I choking with, and of course, he had no answer. With all the coughing, the baby got very active and even after I calmed down, he was moving back and forth, and not letting me sleep. That turned out to be a good thing, as I found out the reason for my chocking - heartburn. As I was laying trying to fall back asleep, the acid just travelled from my stomach straight into my throat. Since I was awake, I sat down right away so it didn't reach my air pipe this time. I had to take more pillows to prop myself up, so that acid from my stomach would not have such an easy time reaching my throat, which turned out to be very uncomfortable for sleeping. In addition I started having contractions (I think BH since they didn't hurt, just were uncomfortable), but they were not just at the top of my tummy as usually, but were all over including the bottom part and my back.

So to make the long story short, I barely slept the entire night. When DH woke up in the morning I told him everything and I was still having those contractions and asked him to keep his cell phone close. He told me to cross my legs and not to give birth today (which is February 29th), so as not to rob our baby from having birthdays every year. I told him that he shouldn't talk to me but talk directly to the "boss" :). In addition, we had a snow storm, so the entire day I didn't go outside (nor did I want to), and I am glad to report that even though my baby has been kicking crap out of me, and I had some more of BH contractions, it is 11 p.m. and he is still safe and sound inside of me :).

Today, I actually did more laundry (if that's even possible) and finally finished packing the baby's hospital bag. Yei me!!! Now, I have to do mine, but I don't have a bag as all our suitcases/bags are in a closet in the basement (and of course in the farthest corner which is impossible to reach as all our stuff is in that closet) Ugh!!! I've also figured that I don't like the diaper bag that I was handed over, as it doesn't fit much stuff. I put all the baby stuff in there and it was impossible to close, so yes I am not happy and thinking about getting another one!

37w0d - 37w5d Pretty Quiet

It has been almost a week since my last post and there has not been much excitement in my life. The days just pass without me accomplishing much. The construction guys are in the basement and the work is moving along fairly well, but because of third people in the house, I am usually just stuck upstairs, mostly in my office, so as not to breath the dust. I had some bursts of energy and continued knitting the blanket for my little one, although I doubt that it will be done in time, as there is still a long way to go. I've made a list of things I need to buy to get my hospital bag ready, but I don't have a car and am at the mercy of DH, so didn't get to a store yet. It doesn't look like the baby has dropped yet, so I believe I still have some time and hence procrastinating. However, I've been having some weird sensations in my groin area and lower tummy, so I am thinking there are certainly some preparation for the baby engaging on the way, given that I am almost 38 weeks.

Our weekend was also pretty quiet. On Friday when DH got home I asked if he wanted to go out for sushi. He did. So I called my parents and they were up for it as well and so did my MIL. So we had a family sushi night (sort of). Later on DH & I went to a friend's house and it was nice to hang out with our friends, especially my prego friend's husband who was here for a week. We didn't leave until almost 1 a.m., which sucked as Saturday morning we had a very early start. The cleaning lady was finally coming as all the drywall work was finished and even though DH vacuumed and washed floors a few times, there was still a great deal of dust everywhere. So she had lots to do, and I went to my yoga class. I bought a deal a while ago for 15 classes and this was my last paid class. I haven't decided if I want to go again next week, but it was hard, as with baby being big and still high up I cannot move much with my upper torso as he is pushing on everything including my diaphragm and I ended up getting heartburn. I was so tired when I got home, that I took a 2.5 hour nap. DH had to paint the ceiling in the basement, so we didn't do much for the rest of the day. Plus I got into a huge fight with DH, as MIL has been coming every freaking day to look at the basement. She came in on Thursday (even though they were still finishing sanding and there was a lot of dust) and then she came in on Saturday (although nothing changed, as they only started floors after finishing sanding). Well of course she is so freaking curious that she couldn't just pass it on, so she came and walked all over the first floor in the slippers that she wore in the basement. So I freaked as the cleaning lady has just finished washing everything. Well, it didn't go over well, as DH was also not in the mood as he wasn't really enjoying painting the ceiling, so we had a huge blow out and then didn't talk for the rest of the evening.

Sunday morning my SIL was having breakfast for her parents, and BIL called to invite us. I wasn't in the mood to see MIL again and waking up early, so I stayed home in bed while DH went by himself (a first). After breakfast DH's brother came to help with painting and push DH to paint the walls too (that's what contractors recommended to do before they progress with the flooring). So DH and I discussed the colours and he went off to the store. BIL was in the basement finishing up painting the ceiling and I was just sat down in the washroom when the door bell rang. I swore but was thinking it was DH who had his hands full and didn't want to look for a key, so I called his cell to tell him I was busy and to just get the key and open the door, but he said he was still at the store. Hmm. So then I figured that my parents have a key and if that was them they would have left themselves in (although they rarely come without calling first), and for the rest people I didn't care if they were coming without calling. Of course, DH called in about a minute that it was MIL who came to bring lunch for both DH & BIL. She was ringing and walking around the house and then knocking on the basement window for BIL to open the door for her. Of course, she took the same freaking slippers and made another track on the first floor (which I washed the day before). When DH came I told him to deal with it otherwise I would snap at her and of course he made it into a joke while telling her. Whatever. She ended up spending a few hours in the basement, and then having lunch with us. I hate the way she cooks and rarely eat her food, plus DH cooked just the night before, so we didn't need her food, but DH & BIL did eat it to make her happy. Anyways, I was happy when she finally decided to leave.

I guess my emotional state is not very stable right now, as I had another blow out on Saturday while texting back and forth with my sis. I had to stop, go down to DH so I can vent before actually blowing up. It's a long story with a prior history so I am not going to get into details here.

Monday was a "family day" so DH & I decided to make a family breakfast which we didn't have for a long time. Everyone came, so I was pretty occupied. The kids were making a ruckus and I was trying to help DH with cleaning up as well. Everything was going pretty well as I only had minimal interaction with MIL who decided that I've been very quiet lately because I am afraid of labour. Hmm??? I don't know where the hell she took it from, but I am actually very relaxed about this whole experience (which I am also surprised knowing myself), but whatever, I let it pass. Then as my parents were leaving and she was leaving as well, we started talking about a glider that I was thinking of just getting from my sis which was initially bought for my mom when she had my brother, but my nephew loves it and DH really hates it so I told my parents that we will be looking for a new glider to which my MIL (who was not even asked her opinion) said that I should listen to her and just get a chair and not a glider. I told her that I want a glider and it is not her decisions, to which she again said that I should listen to her as I will fall asleep in a glider and will drop a baby WTF??? I told her that (a) I don't fall asleep sitting up, (b) my mom didn't fall asleep and (c) my sis didn't fall asleep with either of her kids. So why would I who needs to be very comfortable to sleep (and cannot sleep even on the 14 hour flights after travelling for 26 hours) would fall asleep in the chair. BS! Thank G-d they were leaving, as I was at the end of my rope. The rest of the day DH and I just spent vegging out in front of TV (I actually dozed off and slept through half of one program).

Today, was back to the routine. I walk up feeling sick - I was sneezing and coughing and my nose was stuffed up. I was sure I was getting a cold. But after two cups of tea I felt much better, so I am not sure if it is a cold, or pregnancy stuffiness combined with overall dust in the house. My mom also stopped by and we had some more tea together. I've also done a few things for my dad, so overall was occupied. I also found chicken in the fridge and decided to do teriyaki. As I don't know how to cook, I called DH for detailed instructions. He said to cut everything up before starting cooking, so I figured one hour should be enough, and started at around 5 p.m. to have dinner ready for his arrival. Of course, it took me 1.5 hours just to cut everything. I am not a fan of cutting onions and DH uses some sort of slicer and with one quick movement cuts 1/2 of the onion in little cubes. Well, I don't have DH's strength so was struggling with that slicer for over 20 minutes, the rest of the veggies were easy, but cleaning up and cutting up chicken took a looong time. By the time I was done cutting everything DH came home, so we cooked together (under his supervision) and the result was very tasty! Plus I had an idea to make rice noodles too, so all together it was a good meal. DH actually managed to go to a store while I was finishing up cooking and get us some chocolate and ice cream (yummy!!!). He also bought some muffins and cookies and my friend is going to visit me tomorrow and we had absolutely no sweets in the house.

Also yesterday I was talking to a friend of mine who is also pregnant (she is having a c-section in less than a week) and she was complaining that she couldn't sleep, and I was telling her that my problem is not with sleep per se but with waking up to go to pee every 2 hours. Well, last night I had the same problem, I couldn't make myself comfortable. I actually got up in the middle of the night to get another pillow so I can have something behind my back for support. At the most frustrating point I was thinking of going downstairs and sleeping on the couch as that way there is back support, but I love my bed too much. :)

It's funny how it is getting hard to plan anything now. A friend of mine is celebrating her birthday on March 3 and sent an invitation, and my reply was "may be". It is 5 days before my due date, but who knows what the little one decides to do. I did email her to explain to her and of course she understands. But it is still feel a bit weird that we cannot plan much. Although I should be used to it as for the past 5 years I've been always trying to plan around "may be I will be pregnant at that time", so glad those times are over for now. I have a lot of things that I want to do after the baby arrives - like start running (although there is a tiny thought in my head that says that I want to run now because I cannot, but once I am able too, I will have no desire to do, LOL, I guess we will see.) I do want to lose weight - way below my pre pregnancy weight. As of now I am up 6 kg, which I will probably drop pretty much right away with the birth of the baby, but I need to drop another 20-25 kg to get into a normal weight range. But we will talk about that once the baby is here and on a routine. I am reading "baby whisperer" book and I like it so far and really hope we can implement it.

Well that's it for now. Baby is kicking the crap out of me both in my ribs and below in my groin area, so I better get horizontal for him to calm down. :)

36w1d - 36w6d Last Day at the Office, My Baby Shower and more...

The last few days have been pretty busy.

Friday was my last day at the office, and instead of leaving earlier (as we do on Fridays), I ended up leaving even later than I would on a regular day. I had to file different forms with my professional organization and professional insurer, and make sure that I am all set up for the year with what a minimum requirement is for me. I was constantly back and forth between my computer, my bosses office and my replacement's office (which was mine for the past 5 years). I was physically exhausted and my legs were shaking by the end of the day.

I got a pleasant surprise in the morning, when my boss told me that he is going to top up my maternity payment to the maximum amount allowed without me losing the benefit. This was very unexpected coming from him. We did talk for a few months now, how my boss and my replacement would be contacting me with questions while I am on mat leave, and he said his conscience would be clear if he continued paying me something for my trouble, although he understands that there will be a dead zone when the baby is born.

When I got home, DH asked if I wanted to go to a movie and I told him no, but that if he wants he can go with our friends, and he did, and I just snuggled on the couch with a warm cup of tea and TV. Well, 15 minutes later there was a knock on the door. My sis came to decorate the house for the baby shower. DH did a great job in cleaning the house as the construction in the basement is still ongoing. So I helped my sis to decorate the house and then my SIL came over to help, plus they brought some of the stuff for games. We finished decorating the house and then just hung out until 12:30 a.m. The girls opened a bottle of wine, and I actually had a few sips as well, cause for some reason I really really wanted it, and I figured there will be no harm done with me having a few sips of white one for the first time in forever.

Saturday, we didn't do much. I wanted to look for a nice top for my Baby Shower, but the store I went to already had the summer stuff. It was -10C outside and they were selling short sleeve or sleeveless tops. I tried to pick through what they had on sale with 3/4 or long sleeves, but nothing really sat well. So instead I bought 2 nursing bras! We also went looking for vanities and toilets, and then ended up at my parents' house, as I was getting really hungry and we were close to their house (and had no food at home). We spent a few hours with them and then headed home for a quiet evening.

Sunday was my BABY SHOWER!!!

Here is the wording of an e-invite that was sent out to my friends:

It's A Baby Shower!

Bottles and booties, diapers and pins this is where the love begins!

____ and ______ have a baby on the way so we're throwing them a shower before the big day.

This baby is blessed with 4 cousins, and a full house of baby gear. As a result, no registry is set up and the only things missing are diapers and wipes.

This is the time for the ladies to relax, have a drink and have some fun, so leave the kiddies with your hubbies!

We woke up at around 10 a.m. to give us time to have breakfast together, tidy up a bit and for me to get ready. The guests were invited for 1 p.m., and my mom was the first to come for at around 12:30 p.m. when I was still getting ready. My cousin, my sis and SIL also came before 1 p.m. to start setting up. All together we had 19 people at our house. Once my mom came, DH joined his brother to go skating with our nephews.

Most of the guest came between 1 and 2 p.m. We had 19 people at my house. When I got downstairs my sis and cousin put a nice ribbon across the top of my tummy with a tag which said "Do not open till March 9, 2012". How cute was that? Although my initial due date was March 8 (and that's what I am going by), I still really got a kick out of this. After having some snacks (that my sis, SIL, mom and even my aunt cooked). My sis wanted to say a toast. Well, it didn't go so well. After the phrase, "Attention everyone I want to make a toast" her eyes started watering (and so did mine and my SIL). She unsuccessfully tried to start over again and again while holding back tears, but I just told her that I know what she wanted to say, we kissed and left it at that. Both her and my SIL know what hell we had to go through to finally be able to have a baby shower in our honour, and they are both extremely happy for us. I know that and I don't need her to tell me that :).

Then the fun part began. GAMES! I was lucky that since I was the mom-to-be this time around, I was the judge and didn't have to participate in any games. Ha-ha! So the first game was who can drink the first out of a sippy cup, which apparently is not such an easy task, as I was told. The sippy cups used in this game were presented to me for future use by my baby (after they undergo some sterilization of course). The next game was even more hilarious as all guests were divided into groups and the goal was to make a diaper on one of the teammates out of toilet paper without using any clips or glue etc. It was fun to watch as the toilet paper was ripping apart. One team actually made a little "pipi" too which actually fell out when they all presented themselves for me to judge.

The next game had more meaning, as the teams were mingled and then were given two magazines from which they had to cut out and glue on a paper the image of our baby and the words that would represent his character. All teams did an amazing job, and I asked that everyone sign their name on the back so that I can include those in the baby's journal. The one that won did not have much on the page, but had the main character that I am hoping for my baby - BLUE EYES! Oh my G-d, I have hazel eyes, but DH's eyes are blue. My two nephews have huge blue eyes, the eyes you can drown in. But both BIL & SIL have blue eyes, and even though DH has blue eyes I was told that darker colour usually prevails. So yes, I picked the one which specifically focused on blue eyes (that team was also lead by my mom, so it was not a surprise that she knew a bit about what I want, LOL).

The last game was - spit a binky. It was also hilarious as girls tried to spit a pacifier the farthest. My other cousin was taking pictures and apparently had lots of good ones, which she didn't show me yet.

We then had desert that my sis, cousin and aunt backed, and an ice cream cake that my cousin's DH made. It was delicious. As I was full from breakfast I barely ate any snacks, but did have some desert. It was close to 4 p.m. when the first few started to leave, and my sis stopped them and said that there was one present that she wanted me to open before anyone left. It was a present from my cousin. When I opened the box I started crying. There was a little onesie that had printed on it the word "littlest" and our last name. It was sooooo cute. My cousin made me promise that the baby will wear it for a photo shoot and then I give it back to her so she can frame it (she wanted to frame it before giving it to me, but then realized that the baby should wear it first). As for the rest of the gifts, the baby got a diaper cake that was made by two of my friends. My cousin also gave him a book in Russian with lots of colourful pictures and short poems that I've learned as a child as well. One of my friends gave the baby an album for baby's hand and foot prints. My mom's best friend also bought two book (one I didn't really like, it was mainly grey/black colour with splashes of red, but the other one made me cry when I read it later one). My aunt gave us a nice storage box (green - the colour of the nursery), and there was a rattle, photo frame and album, 3 onesies, and also a baby journal with buttons to record baby's first. The rest of the gifts were money and gift certificates, which was nice as we have to go shopping for little stuff that the baby is still missing.

After 4 p.m. the girls started leaving slowly and some guys started to come in. My cousin's DH came, my BIL with my niece and nephew, our friend C, DH & his brother with other nephews, my dad with my brother, and my mom's best friend's DH. By 5 p.m. when most of the other girls left and guys had enough to eat, we made them spit the binky :) It was so funny as DH and his brother were tied for the first place, and had to redo it 3 times as every time they would spit the binky at the same distance. The kids also joined in and had lots of fun.

Everyone left around 7 p.m. and it was the first time when I actually sat down after helping DH to clean up. With the party being at my house, I couldn't relax, as there was always something needed and when not needed I was walking around mingling with my friends. DH & I took all the greeting cards and snuggled on the couch to read them. I could feel my legs hurting all the way from my lower back to the heals and balls of my foot. When I got up to go to the bathroom, I had a shooting pain in my leg from my butt down and I almost felt as my leg gave up. DH helped me to get to the washroom, as I could only walk by holding onto walls. I didn't realize how exhausted I was and that I should have rested much sooner. The rest of the evening DH & I spent on the couch.

On Monday morning we had our OB appointment. The good news: the baby is still very high up, but with head down. My blood pressure and baby's heart beat are good. It most likely be another 3-4 weeks until birth, as on average with first time moms it takes about 2-3 weeks for labour to start once the baby drops. The bad news: I have the bacteria that he tested for last time. I wasn't really upset with the news. My sister had it and everything turned out ok.

After our appointment, DH & I headed downtown, as we needed to sign some docs to open a LOC (just in case) and also come by my office to pick up all my stuff. On the way back, DH dropped me off at my parents where I spent the rest of the afternoon. So my first day off work was really not restful at all.

On Tuesday and today, I did do some baby stuff in between of finishing up some stuff for the office. I've done all of our laundry and the baby's laundry for the initial 3 month phase. I also took the bassinet apart so I can wash all the cloth parts. I've also managed to go out for a walk today, which was nice, and hopefully I can do it every day from now on, weather permitting.

Otherwise, nothing new with the pregnancy. My bbs have been hurting for the past few days, and I am just attributing it to them getting ready for the big day. BH contractions are on the rise as well. The baby has been pretty active, so doesn't give him mommy any cause for concern. Sleeping has been difficult as I am now up every 1.5-2 hours to pee. Last night when I was up, I thought when will be the next time I can sleep through the night, and the answer was - probably a few years, LOL. Oh well, it is all part of the experience.

35 weeks going on 36 - I can see the finish line!!!

So today is exactly 36 weeks and in my mind that's a milestone after which the baby can come at any time and be ok. Although the pregnancy app on my iphone said that the babies born after the end of the 36th week are considered full term. Notwithstanding, I am very excited to be at this point, and only asked my little one to hold on for another 2 weeks to give his mommy some time to put all her things in order (and get some needed rest). I have been having weird thoughts that I think the baby is now in horizontal position (don't know the correct name for it), but I am still hoping that it is just pregnancy hormones at work. I still think he is pretty high up as I can feel him constantly moving close to my ribs and I still have heartburn (I actually had a very bad case of heartburn today), so I don't think he dropped yet and if he is in any position other than head down, he will have some time to turn.

The other exciting news is that tomorrow is my last day of work! Yes, it is!!! I've been working at this firm for exactly 5 years as of this Sunday, so I do deserve a break. I can't believe that this time has finally came. I remember in October early November, I was thinking - a few weeks until our holiday, then a few more weeks until the boss goes away, and after he comes back just 2 more weeks until my replacement starts and then 4 weeks training the replacement and I'll be done. It all looked so far away, and now it seems like the time just flew by. I have so much planned for this weekend and next week, but first, should probably go back to a week ago.

So the majority of the events during the past week revolve around renovations of our basement. The contractors are great and sticking to schedule (if not going ahead) - knock on wood! In the middle of last week they told DH that he would have the entire weekend to complete all the electrical work as they would not do drywall until Monday; however, they did get a bit ahead of schedule and DH started doing electrical work on Thursday evening, as Friday they already finished putting up the drywall in the bedroom and bathroom downstairs. There were a lot more to be done, so DH spent an evening on Friday making some progress. On Saturday we had a very early class which started at 8:45 a.m. which also meant that I had to get up pretty much at the same time as I do every day to go to the office :( . The class was CPR and emergency, and it only lasted until around noon. I liked it. The instructor was hilarious and I did learn a bit (we also got a little booklet that I can review as well). I still think that if something happens and DH is going to be around, he will be the one handling the emergency as I easily go into a panic mode. So really hoping I am not faced with anything life threatening. DH was a bit pissed, as he said that with her jokes and comedy acts the instructor actually made the class longer that it was supposed to be... oh well...

After the class we stopped at my parents' place (as that hospital is very close to them) and I was hungry. I promised DH that we would only spend a few minutes there, but we ended up staying for over an hour as we had lunch and then waited for my dad who also wanted to see us. We then decided to go to a hardwood store to pick up hardwood for the basement, and actually ended up buying it for a pretty good price. We were supposed to babysit my brother, but since DH had a lot of things to do in the basement, I just took the car and went on my own. He was behaving pretty good until it was bed time. As he was finding everything funny and didn't want to sleep, we had to do some exercise so that he can let go of his extra energy. He jumped on the trampoline and played some Wii and then went back to bed, and this time around he felt asleep pretty fast. I had to do somethings for work, so I spent another 1.5 hours at my parents' house working, while making sure that my brother is sound asleep by the time I leave.

On Sunday, we went to buy stone tiles for the bathroom floor and shower floor and walls. We chose them a few weeks ago, but then after smart-ass comments from BIL and SIL, DH started doubting that this combination would work. We actually decided to switch one of the stones and it ended up a bit cheaper. The store was crazy busy and we spent a few hours there until we got all the stone tiles. But as DH was packing everything in our car, he opened one box and the sales person made a mistake when processing our order and instead of 18x18 tiles, ordered 4x4. It was already close to 3 p.m., but to leave and deal with this next week was not an option. So we spent another hour processing the return of the incorrect tiles, processing the purchase of the correct tiles and then waiting for them to get those tiles from the warehouse. We were supposed to go grocery shopping afterwards as our fridge was empty, but there was no time as DH still had a lot to do to prepare the basement for the construction guys. We hurried home and I just made pelmeni, which are my favourite quick frozen meal (although not very healthy). DH was having a lot of troubles fishing a wire from the main floor switch to the basement and BIL came over to help him. As they were struggling downstairs, I decided to do some more work, but then got a call from my mom that they are passing by and would be stopping to see the basement. The WORST timing ever!!! MY dad has a tendency to give DH unsolicited advice, and DH gets upset as he makes him feel like he doesn't know anything (although in most cases where advice is given it is not the best advice). I think my dad is still jealous of me being with DH. We've been together for almost 11 years, but my dad doesn't seem to let it go and try to make himself as an indispensable part of my life. I am not going to go into details now what my dad was doing and saying when DH and I started going out and I started to stay over at his place, but believe me when I say that at some point it was bearing on ridiculous.

Anyways, my parents came and I was spending time with my mom and brother, while my dad was trying to help DH & BIL with that stupid cable. It took them another hour or two to finally have it through, and my parents left, and so did my BIL as he had his hockey game. I asked DH if he needed any help, he declined and I went back to my computer and eventually to sleep. I woke up around 2 a.m. to pee and DH was not in bed, the next time I woke up was 4:45 a.m. and DH just came into the bedroom to take the shower before going to sleep, he didn't get to bed until after 5:00 a.m. and he wasn't done! He actually didn't go to the office on Monday morning and spent another few hours finishing up.

Monday, the contractors also made a huge progress and there were a few things that DH had to finish up (again he didn't get to bed until 3 a.m.). On Tuesday we had our breastfeeding class after work. DH told me that if he is the only guy in the class he would leave and wait for me in the car. We were the first ones there, so he stayed, and it turned out that there were about 10 couples plus 3 girls on their own. I was happy that DH came as it did took both of us to figure out what the instructor was trying to explain. She had a very heavy accent and after a long day at work she was really hard to understand, although I did find the class to be beneficial as I found out some very useful information. The instructor was telling us that we were going to finish early, but we ended up finishing 30 minutes late, which was around 10 p.m. On the way home, DH realized that he probably forgot to put a cable for the lights in the hallway in the basement, he couldn't remember if he did or not. He has been working so hard on that basement and was so exhausted that I was just praying that he just forgot, but no such luck. As we got home he looked through the photos he took of all the electrical wiring before the drywall went up and the wire was not there. It was close to 11 p.m., and DH was so devastated by this discovery that I couldn't leave him by himself. He dismantle smaller pieces of drywall and could put the wire through part of the way, but then had a big hurdle to overcome and a huge piece of drywall, which I ended up holding up. I was getting sleepy and tired, but all I could think was that DH put so much into our house and has been such a rock solid foundation for both of us, that I can go through a bit of pain to help him through both physically and emotionally as he was getting discourage trying to pull the wire through 3 studs that were together. Finally at around 2 a.m. the heavy lifting was done, and I could go to bed. He was still downstairs for another hour making final adjustments. And this Wednesday it was the last of it, he again worked until close to 3 a.m. but had all of the pot lights installed. Yei!!! no more working nights for DH!!! and the contractors already started taping and caulking the drywall. They are trying to finish everything by the end of next week and may be some minor fix ups into the beginning of the following week, but it is still amazing.

The only downside of the construction being at the house was that I cancelled our cleaning lady last Saturday, and she is not coming until next week Saturday. The house is a mess and I am having my baby shower in here on Sunday. My sis is coming tomorrow to decorate, but I need time to clean up at least a bit before she does. Plus tomorrow being my last day at the office, I am not sure when I will be home. So this weekend is shaping up to be a bit on the crazy side again. Plus on Monday I have my OB appointment and on Tuesday an appointment with our pediatrician (yes on Valentine's day and it is at 5:30 p.m.), otherwise no special plans on Valentine's day, so only time will tell what we are going to do. My 37th week is going to be interesting!!!

34 weeks and a crazy weekend

So last Thursday (January 26) we crossed the 34 week threshold. When DH picked me from the train he started talking about his employee in the States who has been majorly misbehaving, and the worst part is that DH & BIL rely heavily on this person's work. By the time we reached the house, DH was saying that BIL is planning to go to the States to look for a replacement. I was so worked out that I started crying and telling DH that I don't know if I would be able to let him go, and he said that he didn't even consider it. We talked through the entire evening and one of the problem was that if that person would not show up for work on Friday, DH & BIL would have to go there over the weekend (which would suck as we had our prenatal classes booked for that weekend). After having dinner and relaxing I could actually think rationally. We decided that theoretically I will only be 36 weeks pregnant when he will go, and at our next OB apt we would ask him what is the probability of me going into labour in the following week. Although, DH said he will not tell his brother that he might go with him until we know for sure.

On Friday, I called DH a few time and it turned out the guy was in and working, which means that at least for the weekend we were safe. In the evening, we were on babysitting duties, and I told my mom that once the baby is born, she'll be returning the favour, LOL. My brother was behaving very well (he usually does, when it is just me and DH), and we left their house around midnight. Since he is 13, technically he can be home by himself, but since he is autistic, last time we left before my parents came back (even though he was sound asleep), I had nightmares about him. This time, I managed to get through to my parents by 12:30 a.m. and they were already on their way home, so I didn't worry.

Both DH & I got very little sleep that night as we had to be up early for our Labour & Delivery class. Notwithstanding lack of sleep I was all wired up and found the class to be very informative and interesting. DH could barely keep his eyes open, but still managed to take away some useful information. A good student I am (and was during my school/university days), we were sitting in the first row at the desk closest to the teacher. I took lots of notes and after lunch we had a tour of the hospital. I have been familiar with the birthing unit as I spent an entire day there when my sis was giving birth to my niece, but didn't know where the assessment room was. It turned out to be a pretty small room with only 4 stalls and a few chairs (if the stalls are all occupied)and all of the stalls were occupied. In the birthing unit there were only two rooms occupied, so I guess it was a pretty quiet day at the hospital. So I was surprised by my own reaction as we were standing in the birthing unit with the teacher (who is an L&D nurse explaining everything), I started looking at the bed and thinking that in 5-6 short weeks, I'll be in a room like this giving birth! It did freak me out a bit.

When we left the hospital and were walking to the car (I found a free parking lot not far from the hospital, but still it was a nice stroll), I told DH that I thought that I my BIL & SIL would have taken the classes, they would have a much better experience with the birth of their oldest son. To which DH replied that he wanted to share his thoughts, but that the decision will always be up to me. He would prefer for me not to take any drugs, if I could handle it and have a natural birth. Well, I have been thinking about the whole epidural situation when I got pregnant, and I've seen the recovery process of with and without an epidural, as my sis didn't have time to get an epidural with her second kid. With the epidural she had complication and couldn't pee and had to spent 4 days at the hospital (here they kick you out 24 hours after vaginal birth), but without an epidural she was out and about 2 hours after giving birth. So, I asked my sis if she would go for the third would she take the epidural, and she said that the pain is very very intense and that if she wasn't told that the baby was coming out now, she would not be able to handle the pain. I also noticed that in all the videos all girls who were going with natural birth had doulas/midwives coaching them, and they did talk about that extra support being what they needed to push through. So, my thinking is that I'll try to go without epidural for as long as I can, trying to do exercises that we watched in the video, and try to have gravity do the job; but ultimately, if the pain will get too much and there will be no end in sight, will have to resort to epidural. I did have this discussion with my US prego friend and she is also of the same opinion and will try to do the same.

After the class we had about an hour before stores close, so we made a mad dash to look at vanities and flooring, and looks like we finally made a decision on those fronts, although nothing was ordered. By the time we were heading home it was getting too late, but DH wanted to have our friends and his brother over, so we stopped by the grocery store and I was a bit grumpy as I was tired and hungry. At the end everyone had other plans, so nobody came, and DH and I spent the evening together. As we were sitting at our computers, DH suddenly asked where was our bassinet for the baby, I said that we did have it and it was in the guest bedroom. We walked there and I showed him both the bassinet and the legs that go with it. He still looked puzzled and nervous. He asked where the other bassinet was that we are planning to put downstairs, and it took a second to realize that he was talking about a play pan. I told him that it was at my sis' friends place and we could pick it up at any time. I asked him what was going on, and he said that he started thinking that the baby is coming very soon, but we have no place for him to sleep, so he got anxious. The thing is that we did have a play pan, but when my US prego friend was here, my sis said that she can take it as she had another one, so she took it, but we never got the one to replace it. It was so out of character for DH to be so anxious, he was my support and rock solid foundation during 5 years of our IF struggles and through this entire pregnancy. But I know how he already loves our little "hamster".

Sunday turned out to be a very bad day for a lot of people, and we were the only ones that didn't suffer much, as our troubles were negligent in comparison to what other people around us had to go through. On the way to our taking care of the baby class, MIL called and said that my SIL's grandma passed away, and that SIL left to visit her parents to be close to them. I was so upset for her that I could barely keep myself from crying, I did have lump in my throat. I told DH that I would not be able to talk to SIL without crying as it also reminded me of my grandma's passing just a few years ago. My SIL already had tickets to visit her grandma in April, and I remember my conversation with her in the fall when she was saying that she really really wanted to visit her grandma as she thought the time was running out. It's too sad that she was correct. When my grandma passed away in April a few years ago, it took us by surprise as well, as my mom was planning to go visit her in May and I was hoping to convince DH to go visit in August/September. So, DH called SIL and her mom to offer our condolences, and I was sitting right next to him fighting back tears.

Well the only bad thing that happen to us on Sunday, was that we were 30 min late for the class, as they rescheduled the class for 30 min early but didn't send an email with the change. We didn't miss much as it was a recap from the previous day. This class was more hands on, so it actually seem to fly by and both DH & I enjoyed it. The highlight was watching the nurse bathing a 10 hour old baby, and then swaddling him. Even with the nurse with lots of experience doing it, it looked a bit challenging as the baby was wiggling his arms and legs, as opposed to the doll that we had, which was quietly laying on the table and allowing to be swaddled, carried and breast fed :). But the baby was so so cute. I can't wait for our little one to make his appearance. I know he is going look just perfect in our eyes :).

After we left the hospital, I was talking to a friend of mine who said that she just got a word that our mutual best friend is heading to the same hospital because her mom felt down the stairs and broker her leg in two spots (the same leg that she broke the year before), and since my friend's parents are divorced, all the burden of taking care of the mom lays on my friend, so I feel very bad for both of them, as they live a good distance apart.

Of course, not long after I talked to my friend, my sis calls that she fell from the stairs and hit her back on the corner of the railings. She sends me pics of her back with a big scratch and bruises, and at the end of the day my BIL goes to his hockey game and gets hit with a puck in his leg. The hit was so hard that after he took his skates off he couldn't walk!

So that was a pretty eventful weekend, but more craziness was about to start. The guys came in on Monday to start basement renovations. They only worked about half a day, but when I got downstairs on Monday evening, they had most of the framing down. DH was happy but also freaked out, as he is the one doing electrical, which meant that he had to start right away, as they were going fast. Tuesday and Wednesday we spent a lot of time in home improvement stores picking up electrical stuff (basically DH picking and counting and planning) and me just standing around and trying to be helpful. He has been working very hard during evenings and late into the night and was getting exhausted (he is still in the basement as I type this).

Yesterday, I reminded DH that our OB appointment was this Thursday. Of course he forgot and made an apt with an appraiser to come in (as we are also applying for LOC just in case), plus the home improvement store was supposed to deliver materials and initially DH was told between 9 and 11 a.m., but then he got a call that the delivery would be between 7 and 11 a.m. As we tried to make decisions regarding the basement and figure out how to plan the morning, DH sat down at his computer and his computer crashed. I felt so bad for him, I couldn't look at him without tears. With everything that we are going through right now, the last thing he needed was his computer crashing. I told him to go to sleep and that we would figure out everything in the morning, and the computer did somehow manage to fix itself (knock on wood). We also managed to do everything that need to be done in the morning and still get to OB's apt on time.

I told OB about my blurry vision spells and he was surprised. He said that it is usually caused by high blood pressure and that during the entire pregnancy my BP was on the lower side of normal (110 over 70), which was the same that showed in his office and what I've been getting at home. The baby's heart beat was good, and I think he even referred to it as being perfect :) I also think that he found the head where it's supposed to be - down, but he didn't say anything, so this is just my assumption, cause he felt the baby at the top with his hands, then found the head with his two fingers and then was listening to the baby's heartbeat at the lower part of my tummy. We also did a swab for the bacteria. I was a bit anxious about it as I read that they take it both in vagina and in the rear, but he did it so quickly that I didn't even had time to react. My next apt with him in on Monday February 13th.

Here is a little update with respect to the pregnancy as we finished 35 weeks, my bb's have been hurting a lot in the past few days, so I think they are getting ready for the big day, since they haven't hurt like that from the time I just got pregnant. On Monday or Tuesday I actually had to go to the washroom to take off my bra for a bit to feel better.

I am also getting bigger, and am bumping into things. Just a few minutes ago, I bumped my tummy as I was trying to get up from sitting at my computer. It was painful and made me worry a bit, as I had a pink line on my tummy, but the little one seems ok. I have also gained almost 6 kg all together (by my scale). At OBs appt this morning the weight was up 4 pounds since my last apt 3 weeks ago. Otherwise, the baby has been pretty active, except for one day this week when he made me very nervous. He would usually "say" good morning when I wake up and lay in bed or definitely by the time I leave the house, but it wasn't so that day. I think I felt him move a bit on the train ride to the office, but he wasn't his usual active self. He didn't move at all until around noon, and by that time I was slowly getting anxious. I had a few fruits and some cold water and he rewarded me with some movement, so I decided that I should not worry, but even for the remainder of the day his movements were very few and far in between. I was happy when the next day and the following day he was back to his usual self. I did ask OB about that and he said it is normal for babies to have sluggish days. I just hope it doesn't happen again, as I hate being normal. It does hurt what he is doing right now, i.e. playing football with my insides and kicking me in my right rib, but I prefer that anytime over the silence.
